Year 6
Mr Elston and Miss Scotting welcome you to
Churchill and Carroll Class.

WEEKLY NEWS

Week beginning 21.05.12

Miss Scotting and Mr Elston would like to say a huge 'well done' to all of Year 6 for completing the SATs this week.

We are sure everyone has done their absolute best and is looking forward to the further exciting learning experiences planned for the rest of the term.

Homework diary reminder

Please could we ask parents to support us in promoting your child's use of their homework diary as it is good practice ahead of the enhanced importance of the homework diary at secondary school.

Please could parents remember to sign your child's diary as they complete homework to show that you are satisfied they have completed it to the best of their ability.  If you do have any queries or concerns regarding homework do not hesitate to contact Mr Elston or Miss Scotting.

Every Year 6 child should be completing at least one after school reading session per day and recording this in their homework diary.

Dates for your diary:

Jubilee Celebration Day: Friday 25th June. We will prepare the children for what they need to bring in for this exciting focus day as we move through this week. We will be completing some work on the Queen's Jubilee and learning more about the royal family throughout the week.

Chatsworth Residential: 11th June - 15th June 2012.

Literacy: Explanation Texts

In Literacy this week we will begin to read and analyse the features of explanation texts before moving onto writing explanations of our own chosen processes or phenomena later in the week. Another focus of this week is on the children's speaking and listening skills, so much of our work will involve group and paired work. We will be giving the children the opporutnity to 'talk' through the explanation of different processes.

Throughout this week both classes are continuing to look closely at sentence building, editing and improvement. The children should be writing with a range of simple, compound and complex sentences in their work, by the end of Year 6, and making cohesive links between paragraphs.

Maths: Investigations

This week in Maths we will be focussing on 'talk' within Maths and completing various practical investigations in groups and pairs. We will be encouraging children to use mathematical vocabulary in their explanations and solutions to the given problems.

Please note: Maths homework from now will continue to consist of primarily SAT style questions related to the Maths focus for that week. This is to continue to allow children to 'use and apply' their maths skills and knowledge to problems and investigations.

Please check with your child's Maths teacher if they (your child) are having any diffculties with these type of homeworks. Please do not allow homework to create stress at home, as this is never the intention.

Throughout the Summer term we will continue to complete daily times tables practise and testing before extending this to derivation of times tables. E.g: 2 x 2 = 4 so 20 x 2 = 40 and 20 x 20 = 400.

Science: Adaptation

As friday is Jubilee day, we will not have Science this week. We will begin our new unit on 'adaptation' next week.

Experimental and investigative work focuses on:
